The story usually goes something like this. European and Australian sunscreens are better than American ones. The FDA is stuck in the past. Tinosorb is the ingredient we should all be using instead of the old, sketchy filters like oxybenzone. All of that is mostly true. But there's a piece of the story that tends to get left out, and it matters if you're trying to actually understand what you're putting on your skin.
What Tinosorb Actually Is
Tinosorb isn't one single ingredient, it's a brand name covering a couple of related compounds, most commonly bemotrizinol (sold as Tinosorb S) and bisoctrizole (sold as Tinosorb M). Both are synthetic UV filters, meaning they're lab-made chemical compounds designed to absorb ultraviolet radiation. They've been available in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia for over two decades, and dermatologists in those regions generally consider them among the best chemical filters available. They're broad-spectrum, meaning they cover both UVA and UVB rays, and they're photostable, meaning they don't break down as quickly in sunlight the way some older filters like avobenzone can without a stabilizer.
The reason you haven't seen Tinosorb on a US sunscreen label is genuinely a regulatory story, not a hidden danger story. The FDA hasn't approved a new sunscreen active ingredient since 1999. The manufacturer behind bemotrizinol has reportedly spent more than twenty years and upward of $18 million trying to get it approved for the US market, and it's still sitting in review. That's a real and legitimate frustration for anyone who wants access to better sun protection technology. It is not evidence that the ingredient itself is dangerous.
So Why Isn't It in Our Sunscreen?
Here's where we want to be straight with you instead of piling onto Tinosorb the way some headlines have. Tinosorb genuinely appears to be one of the safer, more effective chemical filters available anywhere in the world. If you're going to use a chemical sunscreen, the research suggests it's a reasonable one to look for.
But "safer chemical filter" and "not a chemical filter" are two very different things. Tinosorb still works the same fundamental way every chemical UV filter works. It has to absorb into the outer layers of your skin to do its job, converting UV radiation into heat as it breaks down. That's simply how chemical sunscreens function, whether the specific molecule is decades old or brand new. Being a better-designed chemical filter doesn't change that basic mechanism.
Mineral filters, specifically non-nano zinc oxide, work on a completely different principle. Instead of absorbing into your skin, zinc oxide particles sit on top of your skin and physically reflect and scatter UV radiation away before it penetrates. Nothing has to be absorbed for it to work. That's the distinction that actually matters to us, not "old chemical filter versus new chemical filter," but "absorbed into your skin versus sitting on the surface."
The Part That Gets Skipped
A lot of the online conversation right now frames this as a simple binary: America bad, Europe good, get yourself some Tinosorb. What tends to get left out is that even the best chemical filter is still a chemical filter. Systemic absorption studies on chemical UV filters broadly, not Tinosorb specifically, have found that several of these compounds show up in bloodstream levels well above what the FDA typically considers the threshold for requiring further safety review, sometimes after just a single day of typical use. Tinosorb hasn't been shown to have the same hormone-disruption signals that oxybenzone has, and that's a genuine point in its favor. But the underlying question of what happens when any UV filter is absorbed into your body daily, for years, is still an area of ongoing research rather than a fully settled one.
None of this is meant to tell you Tinosorb is something to fear. If you're comparing it to oxybenzone or octinoxate, it's a real upgrade. But if the actual goal is avoiding systemic absorption altogether rather than trading one absorbed compound for a better-studied one, mineral filters are still the more direct answer to that specific goal.

It's "does this need to absorb into my skin to work, or does it sit on top and reflect UV away."
